Jordan has increased security around shopping malls, foreign embassies and other sensitive locations following a deadly attack at a Greek Orthodox church that left eight people dead and 40 others injured.
The attack took place on Friday in Jordan’s Karak governorate during a funeral service. According to authorities, gunmen opened fire in broad daylight and continued shooting for several minutes before fleeing the scene.
Jordanian officials have described the incident as an act of extremist terrorism. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
Security forces are continuing their search for the attackers, while authorities have increased security measures across the country as a precaution.
Such incidents are considered uncommon in Jordan, which has generally maintained a reputation for relative stability compared with several other countries in the region.
The attack has raised concerns over security at religious sites and other public locations, particularly as authorities work to determine who was behind the violence and what motivated the assault.
